Ever noticed how conditioned we are to subconsciously believe and act with a lot of the advertising and marketing we’ve grown up with?
Wake up and smell the coffee
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day
An eye for an eye
(…or not - depending on where and how you were brought up)
We call these memes: easily replicable stories that shape societies …and in which the society shapes in the future
Now, with memes, what you need to know for marketing and advertising is
1. there’s a rational AND an antirational
*one benefits, the other doesn’t
2. it takes a lot for a meme to embed itself in society
*it needs to be interesting enough to want to be heard; status driven enough to want to be shared; and there must be a physically replicable behaviour in order for it to be fully replicated
The best marketing campaigns in the world align themselves with the memes of society and create new memes that are observed to make life better, easier, or more fun
This is a reminder to (a) don’t believe everything you read, hear, or see and (b) tap into the REAL memes of society in your marketing - not just the ones that look cool on social media
